BGAN

Inmarsat's Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) brings satellite communications to new levels of mobility, performance and reach, in delivering voice and broadband data.

The world’s first truly mobile broadband solution. BGAN uses a small lightweight device to deliver a powerful range of services capable of processing bandwidth-intense and other applications such as: Internet and Intranet access, voice, voice over IP (VoIP), fax over IP (FoIP), live media streaming, videoconferencing, store-and-forward video, email and large file transfer.

BGAN Services

Standard IP service offering background IP data at variable rates up to 492 Kbps over a shared channel

  • Streaming IP service with guaranteed data rates of 32, 64, 128 and 256 Kbps (symmetrically for uplink and downlink)
  • ISDN service at 64 Kbps
  • Landline quality, direct voice service
  • Short Messaging Service (SMS)

Voice Service

Offers high-quality, digital speech compression via dedicated DVSI advanced multiband excitation (AMBE).

Mobile Packet Data Service

The mobile packet data service (MPDS) uses Internet Protocol (IP) and time-shared channels to allocate network resources, enabling cost-efficient, “always-on” remote access at speeds up to 492 Kbps.

Mobile ISDN Service

A dedicated single channel per carrier (SCPC) service that enables high-speed data applications up to 64 Kbps. Users can connect to corporate IT networks, access the Internet, and send digital images, contributing significantly to efficient business operations and remote communications.

Coverage

Delivered via the Inmarsat 4 (I-4) network, BGAN services are available worldwide. Each satellite in the I-4 network, the most advanced satellite network available in the world today, has more than 200 hundred spot beams and a global beam, covering 85% of the world’s land mass.

Equipment

BGAN services are compatible with all Inmarsat approved BGAN devices. BGAN devices range in size, weight, performance and features designed to meet the specific needs of a variety of user groups. BGAN devices are highly portable and able to withstand challenging user environments.

The BGAN services come with a SIM card and a specially designed comprehensive user interface, the BGAN Launch Pad. The Launch Pad simplifies set-up and offers access to all BGAN services and support features making BGAN very simple to operate. The BGAN Launch Pad is uniform across all BGAN devices.

Wideye Sabre1: This device is the entry-level BGAN terminal, ideally suited for mobile use. Over a stan-dard IP connection it connects at up to 384 Kbps when receiving and 240 Kbps when sending. It also supports guaranteed streaming IP services at 32 kbps or 64 Kbps for sending and receiving. Data con-nections are via USP or BlueTooth. Voice is delivered via a standard desktop phone or Bluetooth handset/headset. Weight: 1.25 kg. Dimensions: 254x180x59 mm.

Hughes HNS 9201: Offering the highest bandwidth in the BGAN range. The ruggedized HNS9201 is ideal for small teams or individuals with high data requirements, such as the broadcast media. Over a standard IP connection it connects at up to 492 Kbps, while guaranteed rates range from 32 Kbps to 256 Kbps for both sending and receiving. The HNS 9201 is the only BGAN device to feature both a dedicated 64 Kbps ISDN data channel and connection via WiFi in addition to USB and Ethernet. Voice is via an ISDN handset. Weight: 2.2 kg. Dimensions: 345x275x50 mm.
